Black Ants ( Lasius Niger )

Black Ants are temperate species living in the soil. They harbor from nest in the gardens, under paving stones or occasionally within buildings. There will be a queen per nest. A queen would be 12mm in length and worker ants average length would be 3 to 5 mm. They have four stages in their life cycle. egg, Larvae , Pupae and adult stage. Black ants are Black in colour. They feed on sweet substances seeds, insects and aphid secretions honey dew.

Ants are one of the most common insects found around us. They belong to order Hymenoptera in homes and office buildings including garbage areas. Ants carry germs and transmits diseases. Body length would be from 3 to 6 mm. Queens could be up to 12mm. There are two major ants species common in the Maldives.

(1) Black Ants ( Lasius Niger )---------(2) Fire Ants ( Solenopsis Invecta )

Fire Ants ( Solenopsis Invecta )

Fire ants are small in size from 2mm to 6mm they are golden reddish brown in colour. They have a fiery sting which is in blisters and pustules forms. They build mounds which is about 40cm in height. It builds on grounds and lawns. Fire Ants require access to water and prefer low land areas.
