American Cockroach ( Periplaneta Americana)

This species is reddish brown in colour 3 to 4 cm long. They are the most common form of species found in the Maldives. They are mostly seen often around houses, restaurants, stores sewers and garbage collection cans. Average adult life span is 250 to 350 days.

Cockroaches belong to the Order Dectyoptera. They are nocturnally active. Cockroaches prefer warm dark and moist environments. They harbor in cracks and crevices. Cockroach adults are omnivorous. They carry pathogenic bacteria. There are four major types of Cockroaches.

(1) American Cockroach------------------(2) German Cockroach

(3) Australian Cockroach-----------------(4) Oriental Cockroach

German Cockroach ( Blattella germanica )

This species is amber brown in colour 1 to 2cm long. It doesn’t fly. German Cockroaches prefer warm damp environments. Stores , under sinks , cupboards , drawers and furniture. Average life span of an adult would be for a male 128 days and for a female 153 days.

This species has dark brown spots surrounded by a very distinct ivory yellow band . Its fore wings have yellow stripe along the front margin. Averaging between 2 to 4 cm in body length. Prefers hot and humid conditions. Average adult life span is 120 to 180 days.

Oriental Cockroach ( Blatta orientalis )

Oriental cockroach is primarily nocturnal. Oriental cockroach is dark in color lives in warm humid places. Prefer narrow harborages close to food and water sources. they can climb smooth surfaces. Average adult life span is 60 to 250 days.
